Using DSS API from within a plugin

This is a loose follow-up to this question: http://answers.dataiku.com/1841/are-user-defined-meanings-strictly-global?show=1841#q1841
I'm trying to experiment with different types of plug-ins. I would like to be able to access the public python api from in a custom plugin. If I follow the "from inside DSS" instructions here (https://doc.dataiku.com/dss/latest/api/public/client-python/index.html#from-inside-dss), I get the following error message:
Test failed: API Ticket not available
If I try to use the "from outside DSS" method I am getting an SSL certificate error (that's probably on my server configuration - this is a test server).
Any tips or guidance would be much appreciated.

What kind of component are you writing ? (step, recipe, dataset, macro, ...)

This is a dataset plugin meant for reading in data from an external REST API.

Hi Clement,
Any update on this? I am trying to have a dataset plugin use the DSS API internally for creating meanings. Thanks -
It happens to me on a Dataset component
