How to use DSS formula functions inside Reporters txt message

Hi,
I can't seem to be able to use any of the dss functions inside the reporters text editor.
example:
ParseJson(${variable}) or ArrayLen(${variable)) - I get the text printed out as is.
I've the template type option set to DSS.
