Reinstallation of Windows / Losing file ?

I reinstalled windows without exporting my dataiku projects as files . All my local apps were reinstalled automatically, but I couldn't see the dataiku app anymore. I guess I have to reinstall it? Have my dataiku projects also been deleted? Where can I find these files?

Operating system used: Windows 11

Assuming you installed DSS on Windows with the newly released version, all the Dataiku files are stored in:

%LOCALAPPDATA%/Dataiku/DataScienceStudio/

If the files are still there after your reinstalled Windows then even if you reinstall the launcher it should be able to retrieve the Dataiku installation and its projects.

Dataiku doesn't install on Windows (DSS only runs on Linux) so not sure what you mean.

@wxcdv

Welcome to the Dataiku Community.  We are glad you are here.

It does depend on how and where your DSS Instance was installed.  From your note, it sounds like it was installed locally somehow on your windows computer. It is not clear how you re-installed windows.  One of the processes that can occur when installing windows is the re-formating of your hard drive.  This wipes out all the contents of your files storage either disk or SSD.  Given that you had to re-install all of your applications I have a suspicion that you might have reformated your hard drive or SSD.  In that case, it is likely that your files are gone if they were on your local computer. (There are some services that can sometimes recover such files for a fee.)

Another senario is that you were using Dataiku DSS actually running on another computer provided by your company or Dataiku.  If that case finding the URL you were using will solve that issue.

[Updated] Historically, for folks who try to install DSS on Windows, the used some type of virtual machine to run Linux.  Did you install it as part of a virtual machine using Virtual Box, VMware or some similar tool?  If so, and you did not format your hard disk as part of the windows re-install, you may be able to find the Disk Image Files (VDI, VMDK, VHD, HDD) that contained the virtual file image, this will be one or more fairly large files.  If so you may be able to re-connect the virtual disk image to Virtual Box and continue from where you left off.

Another way would be to use Windows Sub System for Linux (WSL). The files for WSL are stored physically by WSL at the following location:

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Packages\[distro name]
Someones WSL Home folder might be at this rather long path
C:\Users\tom\AppData\Local\Packages\CanonicalGroupLimited.Ubuntu18.04onWindows_79rhkp1fndgsc\LocalState\rootfs\home\tom.

The DSS files would be stored some where in this directory tree structure depending on where you or the person installing DSS put it.

Now apparently there is another way to use a Dataiku provided Launcher App.  @AlxB provides the answers in that case.

Good luck.

Thanks @AlxB

As a long-time user of DSS, I was not aware that we now have a local Windows Install that can be used, without some sort of Linux Virtualization Solution.  Very Cool.  Given the very different structures of Windows and Linux / Mac OS.  How extensive is the support?  Can we for example :

  • Use various Python Libraries?
  • Multiple Python Environments
  • Dataiku Plugins
  • Visual ML
  • Use R
  • Charts
  • Is the design node mostly feature complete?

DSS on Windows is an experimental version of DSS and Dataiku does not officially support it and will never offer a full commercialised DSS on Windows. Regarding the features you listed, if they work on the macOS free edition we do expect them to work on the Windows version.
