Business Challenge:

When Covid hit, our R&D was facing the likely scenario of no access to experimental facilities. As part of the food industry, we are a critical infrastructure for society, and we produce fresh products from natural raw materials to order at a massive scale. We are present in about 80% of consumer-packed foods and supply almost a quarter of the oil and fat consumption in Europe. Thus, it was absolutely business critical to go digital and ensure continuity.

We set up a partnership with EyeOn, contracted Dataiku, collected datasets, and set up a system to enable the first lab-free specification matching tool to support customers and our business.

Business Solution:

Dataiku excels in simplicity on both the back-end and the front-end. The datasets we collected could be easily "wired" in the back-end. Meanwhile, the web interface supported a simple use case that was fool-proof and supported instant adoption for a group of complete data novices, in fact, craftspeople skilled in making artisanal and industrial food.

Value Generated:

In the end, the value generated went well beyond business continuity:

  • We accelerated our customer response time from weeks and months to days and hours.
  • We created datasets and, more importantly, insights from fragmented data points that were scattered around the organization.
  • We're able to onboard our new people must faster and avoid amnesia when people leave.
  • We avoid needless work and are able to crack problems that we do not know how to crack anymore: in the early days, after a few months of lab work, the team checked the tool and found a solution already existed.
  • We have been able to integrate product portfolios from different production sites to enable sales growth.

Value Brought by Dataiku:

Dataiku was the key in providing the platform to collect datasets and provide the user interface. What's more, it makes huge numbers of incredibly fast calculations, making solutions available before they were sought and reducing loading time on the interface from almost a minute to only a few seconds. This is nothing compared to the time it takes to do it in the lab, and is still hugely helpful for the user experience. The versatility for different user groups has also been incredibly helpful.
