For long-running, large projects, there can be tens of thousands of commits. Right now, I'm searching for the commit that deleted a recipe I need to recover. My approach is to scroll through the infinite scroll version history and use ctrl-f to highlight the name of the recipe. A search feature on the version control page would be a huge help for this kind of use case.
